Have you ever walked out of a doctor’s office with “normal” lab results in hand—but feeling anything but normal?

Maybe your bloating, constipation, reflux, or food sensitivities are getting worse. Maybe your energy is flatlined, your belly feels swollen by mid-afternoon, and you’re scared to eat. But because your standard labs or scopes didn’t show anything alarming, you were told, “You’re fine. Maybe take some fiber or cut out gluten.” Or you were prescribed an acid blocker, antidepressant, or anxiety med without anyone asking why your symptoms are happening in the first place.

This is one of the most frustrating – and common -- patterns I see in my clients before they come to me. They’ve gone through visits with gastroenterologists, rounds of standard lab tests, maybe even a colonoscopy or endoscopy—and yet they’re still left with vague answers and a body that’s clearly signaling, “Something’s not right.”

Let me say this clearly: just because your conventional labs look normal doesn’t necessarily mean your body is functioning optimally . In fact, many chronic gut symptoms stem from root causes that these standard tests simply don’t detect.

The Limitations of Conventional Gut Testing

There’s a time and place for conventional diagnostics—truly. If you have red-flag symptoms like bleeding, rapid weight loss, or severe pain, you absolutely want to rule out conditions like IBD, ulcers, or cancer. Colonoscopies and endoscopies are excellent tools for identifying structural or inflammatory issues.

But for people struggling with more chronic, functional digestive issues—bloating, reflux, constipation or loose stools, indigestion, food sensitivities—these tests often come up “clean.” That doesn’t mean nothing’s wrong. It just means the issue isn’t structural or visible.

What conventional medicine can often miss is how well your gut is actually functioning . How well are you digesting and absorbing nutrients? What’s happening with your microbiome? Is your nervous system supporting digestion—or working against it?

None of that shows up on a basic CBC, CMP, or even a scope. Yet all of it can impact how you feel every single day.

A 2016 paper published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology put it this way:

“Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), are common and often have no detectable organic cause on conventional testing. Diagnosis is made based on symptom patterns, and treatment is often inadequate because root causes like microbiome imbalance, gut-brain axis dysregulation, and subtle inflammation are overlooked.” 1

A Different Kind of Gut Testing

This is where functional medicine and the personalized care I provide really makes a difference for people.

When I work with clients who are dealing with long-standing gut issues, we often start by going deeper— with detailed symptom analyses, and specialty functional lab testing that can uncover what’s really going on beneath the surface.

This might include:

- A comprehensive stool analysis to look for gut infections, yeast overgrowth, enzyme insufficiency, leaky gut, or bacterial imbalance
- Functional blood chemistry analysis to detect nutrient depletions or subtle inflammation
- Breath testing (when indicated) to evaluate for SIBO
- And always—an assessment of how stress and nervous system regulation are impacting digestion
Because here’s the thing: symptoms don’t lie. If your gut is giving you signals—gas, bloating, discomfort, fatigue after meals, constipation or loose stools—those are messages. And just because your insurance-covered labs didn’t catch anything doesn’t mean there’s nothing to address.

I’ve had clients come to me after years of feeling dismissed or told their symptoms were “just anxiety.” And yes, stress and the gut-brain connection definitely plays a role—and there’s often also something deeper going on that needs to be uncovered and gently healed.

John’s Story

Take my client John, for example. He came to me after years of heartburn and bloating that seemed to get worse with every passing month. He’d been prescribed acid blockers, which offered temporary relief—but over time, he lost weight unintentionally, struggled with low energy, and had a constant “puffy” feeling in his belly. He loved hiking and cycling but had given up both because he felt too depleted.

His GI doctor had scoped him and said everything looked fine. Blood work came back normal. His doctor told him, “You’re just getting older.”

But John knew something wasn’t right.

When we ran comprehensive stool testing, we uncovered low stomach acid (ironically, the root of his reflux), bacterial imbalance, inflammation, and markers of poor digestion. His gut wasn't functioning well, even though structurally, everything “looked okay.”

As we supported his gut microbiome, improved his digestion, and implemented nervous system-regulating practices, John began to feel dramatically better. His energy came back. His symptoms eased. And eventually, he was back on his bike again, enjoying the freedom of movement and the joy of a full life.
