You’ve likely heard somewhere along the way that most Americans are deficient in magnesium...and many don't know it.

How to know if you are one of them? It's one of those quiet deficiencies that can show up in so many ways: muscle tension, poor sleep, constipation, headaches, blood sugar swings, PMS, insomnia, fatigue. If you're doing “all the things” to support your health and still not feeling your best, part of the issue may be that your body is running low on this one essential mineral.

Magnesium plays a role in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps muscles relax, supports healthy digestion, calms the nervous system, and helps regulate blood sugar.

Some foods that are high in magnesium include leafy greens, almonds, cashews, kelp, buckwheat, millet and pecans.

The challenge? Most of us aren't getting enough magnesium from food alone - and not all [magnesium supplements](https://us.fullscript.com/plans/newdawnwellness-magnesium-product-options) are created equal.

That's where it gets a little confusing, and it’s something I regularly sort through with clients.

There are many forms of magnesium, and each one has a different primary purpose. Taking the wrong one for your needs means you might not get the results you're hoping for.

To make it easier, I've put together a short list of a few of my recommended magnesium supplements - each chosen for a specific purpose:

General support (muscle relaxation, blood sugar, hydration, PMS, sleep and more) → Magnesium Glycinate Complex

Headaches, migraines, tinnitus, and sometimes sleep → NeuroMag (Magnesium L-Threonate), which actually crosses the blood-brain barrier

Constipation → Magnesium Citrate, which supports intestinal muscle relaxation and helps move things along

All of these supplements are available through [my online wellness store](https://us.fullscript.com/plans/newdawnwellness-magnesium-product-options) .
